The Portuguese public healthcare system, known as the Serviço Nacional de Saúde (SNS), offers a wide range of services that are generally of high quality. Funded through taxation, the SNS provides free or low-cost healthcare to residents, including primary care, hospital services, and specialist treatments. According to the 2022 Health Statistics Report, there are 243 hospitals in Portugal, of which 112 are public and 131 are private. These hospitals are primarily located in major cities and coastal areas across the country, where population density also tends to be higher.

– Eligibility and Access

• EU Citizens – EU nationals have the same rights to access public healthcare as Portuguese citizens. They can use their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for shortterm stays and should register with the SNS for long-term residence.
• Non-EU Citizens – Non-EU expats need to obtain a residence permit to access the SNS. Once registered, they can benefit from the same services as residents.

– Emergency Services
In case of an emergency, dial 112, which is available 24/7. The 112 number is the European emergency phone number, accessible throughout the European Union. Calls are free, and dispatched ambulances (from INEM or Firefighters) will take patients to the nearest public hospital. From there, patients can choose to continue care within the SNS or use their private health insurance to arrange (at their own expense) transport to a private hospital or clinic of their choice.

Played on the renowned Sir Henry Cotton Championship Course – recognised as one of the most challenging and historic courses in the Algarve – the event once again highlighted the long-standing partnership between afpop and MEDAL, while offering a day of competition, conviviality, and celebration.

Over 90 players competed in the official tournament under the Stroke Play format, using the Stableford points system. In the Women’s category, Farida Limo secured first place, while in the Men’s category, victory went to Roger Yates. The full results of the tournament can be consulted on the Golf for Greys website.

The day concluded with a convivial lunch and the traditional prize-giving ceremony, attended by players, partners, and guests. In his remarks, afpop CEO Michael Reeve reflected on the history of the tournament, noting that it all began with a conversation between himself and Henrique Pinheiro, MEDAL’s Founder and Managing Director. “Sixteen years later, the event has become a tradition, strengthening not only the institutional relationship between afpop and MEDAL but also providing a unique opportunity to engage with members and clients in a more relaxed and informal setting.”

Echoing this sentiment, Henrique Pinheiro highlighted the importance of proximity to MEDAL’s clients and the afpop community: “It is a privilege for us to support this tournament once again, which always brings together many of our clients and afpop members.
